Sample Department

The Sample Department is the first step in the analytical life of a sample at Spectrum's laboratory. Samples are received via our couriers, Federal Express/UPS, or by client drop-offs. As soon as a sample arrives, a department staff member checks the temperature using an infrared thermometer and initiates a sample integrity check according to NELAC and/or state agency requirements, including a check of the pH and proper sample container. The label on the sample is then compared against the accompanying Chain of Custody (COC). Discrepancies are addressed with the client.


When all issues are resolved, the sample can then be entered into our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). All information from the COC is put into a project for that particular client. From the COC, a work order is created, giving each sample a unique laboratory identification number. Once the sample has a laboratory number, a printed label is then placed on the top and side of the container, for easy recognition by the analysts.

Laboratory Departments

Each sample is then transported to one of the following departments for analysis. Samples are stored in each department's separate refrigerator until they are used.

Air Division Semivolatile Organics
Metals Volatile Organics
Microbiology Wet Chemistry

Quality Services Department

The final step of sample analysis is publishing the lab report, which occurs within the Quality Services Department. Each and every report is finalized and invoiced here, and any EDD files are created and sent via email. The department is responsible for the delivery of all data within the time frame requested.

In addition to reports and invoicing, the Quality Services Department is responsible for answering all incoming telephone calls. Report inquiries and sample pick-up scheduling are handled within the department, and other calls are routed to the appropriate personnel.
